Just like Neville Brody’s work Dadaism is very typographic and very different, they tend to use type heavy designs with abstract images, and a lot like some of the work Neville Brody has designs in his career. Brody like the style and technique used in Dadaism which is possibly one of the reasons why he designs a lot of his work the way he does today. Plastik, i-D and The hudson jeans campaigns have all followed his graphic style in previous work.Īs well as being influenced by Punk rock, Brody was also believed to be influenced by Dadaism, which is very similar to a lot of the work he has produced today. In 1981 Brody began exploring new directions for graphic design as art director for “The Face.”īrody has influenced many other creative professionals and you can see the style of his work coming through in their designs. The V&A have hosted exhibitions of Brody’s work and he has gone on to produce his own book “The Graphic Language of Neville Brody.” He challenges graphic design by playing with scale of type, layering text and placing it at different angles.īrody was influenced by early 20th century avant-garde design, American album covers and the work of Russian constructivists El Lissitzky and Alexander Rodchenko. Neville Brody challenges the conventions of graphic design and was nearly thrown out of the London College of Printing for designing a postage stamp with Queen Elizabeth’s head turned sideways.īrody plays with the margins of visual language and has launched his own revolution in typeface design. Brody is a world famous graphic designer, typographer, philosopher and inventor. In my opinion Neville Brody’s work is something very special as his creativity has had a major influence on graphic design and without him many great fonts wouldn’t have come to light.A great deal of inspiration for the graphics of 3rd Floor has been taken from Neville Brody.

In an interview for the blank page project he said he had been drawing before he could walk and his major influence when he began was punk music and bands such as the Sex Pistols.

Brody has also worked with many European cable channels, Greenpeace and the Dutch postal service however he also created the Times Modern font for The Times newspaper and he played a major part in the rebranding of the BBC helping to create new colour pallets and uniform graphics.īrody was also a pioneer in using computers for graphic design. During his work for Fuse Magazine Brody’s Font designs pushed the limits of graphic design and his work for the FACE magazine have been replicated all around the world.ĭuring his time working for Arena (1987-1990) his designees took a completely different approach as they became very minimalist and the fonts became non-decorative however they did return to the complex decretive designs when he left Arena in 1990.ĭuring his career he has also worked as the Art Director for Fetish magazine where he began experimenting with a new visual language consisting of visual and architectural elements. Neville Brody’s design is very distinctive as he uses overlapping typography to create his designs, which are quite complex and draw the viewer in. Brody studied graphic design In the London collage of printing and made his first breakthrough in the early 80’s when designing record covers in the British independent music scene. Neville Brody or the “Star Typographer” is a British Graphic designer and is considered to be the best graphic designer of his time by many.
